The Importance of Modern Swimming Pool Pumps
Swimming pool pumps can be quite costly. But, you don’t really have much choice about whether or not to have one. Swimming pool pumps are not only required for pool filtration systems and automated pool cleaners, but also by a variety of features such as jacuzzi jets.
The good news is that in most cases the modern swimming pool pump will last as long as your pool. Many other parts, or even the entire pool, will need to be replaced before a good swimming pool pump. Good swimming pool pumps are made of materials that do not corrode under normal use. Additionally, they may be coated with special materials and encased in bronze.
Another benefit of the newer swimming pool pumps is energy efficiency. The older pumps were not all that efficient, but the new ones don’t cost all that much to operate in comparison. As energy costs soar, the difference in the operating cost gets greater.
These newer swimming pool pumps are designed for easy maintenance. You will typically find such features as easy on-off lids, spacious debris catching baskets, and translucent strainer covers on these newer models.
While older pumps were designed for areas with warm climates or cold climates, the modern pumps can withstand contrasts between harsh winters and hot summers. The older pumps would have their seals corrode and oils break down. Water trapped in the pumps might also produce gases of varying pressures or freeze and expand during extreme changes in temperature.
Modern swimming pool pump design compensates with seals made of special materials and industrial quality oils that resist breaking down. You will still want to check these things occasionally as a part of proper maintenance, but they won’t be a frequent problem. Additionally, the water-carrying areas of the pump are made to withstand changes in pressure. However, they may still come under high air-pressure levels when a section becomes plugged due to the change in pressure.
Another feature you should seek in a swimming pool pump is the ability to change operation speeds. Unless you have a particular reason to increase the pump speed at a given time, you will save money on electricity by leaving the pool pump on the low speed setting.
If you don’t currently own an above ground pool or your are a new owner of an above ground pool, you may be surprised to learn that swimming pool pumps are often necessary for these pools too. These pools have many of the same filtration and heating systems that traditional pools have. The pumps for these pools are typically lightweight and weatherproof. You should get years of service out of them. If you’re in the market for a modern swimming pool pump, make sure you go for quality.
